Frequently Asked Questions

What to expect when you contact Lawrence or Joshua and how to prepare for an initial discussion.

Working with the firm

What happens when I first contact the office?

We gather basic information about the nature of the matter, the people or organizations involved and any immediate deadline. This allows the firm to consider whether the matter is within its practice and to complete an initial conflict check.

Does contacting the firm mean you represent me?

No. A lawyer-client relationship begins only after the firm confirms that it can act and the required engagement steps are completed. Do not assume the firm is protecting a deadline or taking action unless that has been confirmed in writing.

What should I include in my first message?

Provide your name and contact details, the general practice area, the names of other parties, any upcoming deadline or court date, and a short non-confidential description of the issue.

Should I send documents right away?

Please wait until the firm confirms that documents can be received. An unsolicited email or attachment does not create a lawyer-client relationship and may not be treated as confidential.

How should I prepare for a consultation?

Organize the key documents, prepare a short chronology and write down the decisions or questions that concern you most. Bring complete documents rather than isolated pages where possible.

Will you tell me what my case is worth?

We can discuss remedies, potential outcomes and the factors that affect value after reviewing the relevant facts and evidence. Early estimates may change as the record develops. No lawyer can responsibly guarantee an outcome.

Should I wait for my injuries to stabilize before seeking advice?

No. Medical recovery may take time, but evidence, insurance and notice requirements can arise much earlier. Obtain appropriate medical care and seek legal advice promptly so that applicable deadlines and immediate steps can be identified.

How are fees determined?

Fees depend on the type, urgency and scope of work. Some matters may be suitable for a defined fee, while others are billed based on time and required work. Any arrangement will be discussed before the firm is retained and documented as appropriate.

How are personal injury fees handled?

Personal injury matters are handled on a contingency fee basis, with a maximum contingency fee of 30 percent of the amount recovered. The amount recovered used to calculate the percentage includes any costs recovered, while HST and disbursements are addressed separately. The agreement, billing requirements and the Law Society of Ontario consumer guide are reviewed with the client before the contingency fee agreement is signed.

Will I have to pay a retainer?

A monetary retainer may be required before work begins. The amount and replenishment expectations depend on the matter. Money held in trust is applied to accounts in accordance with the retainer agreement and applicable professional requirements.

How often will I receive an update?

The appropriate frequency depends on the matter and whether there has been a material development. We encourage clients to ask questions when something is unclear and to promptly share information that may affect the advice or strategy.

Can you act for both sides?

Usually not where interests are or may become adverse. Conflict rules can also prevent the firm from acting where it has relevant duties to another current or former client. A conflict check must be completed before confidential information is shared.

Process and resolution

Does every dispute go to court?

No. Many matters resolve through negotiation, mediation or another consensual process. Court may be needed to obtain urgent relief, compel disclosure, enforce a right or decide an issue the parties cannot resolve.

How long will my matter take?

Timing depends on the issues, the parties, the required evidence, the court or administrative schedule and whether a resolution is possible. We can discuss the expected stages, but exact timing often cannot be predicted.

Can the firm promise a result?

No. Legal outcomes depend on facts, evidence, law, procedure, the other parties and decision-makers. The firm can provide careful advice, preparation and advocacy, but not a guarantee.

What if my matter is urgent?

Call the office and clearly identify the deadline, court date, safety concern or release condition. The firm will advise whether it can respond within the required time. Contacting the firm does not suspend a limitation period or other deadline.
