Careful counsel for complex moments

Based in downtown Hamilton and serving Hamilton and the Greater Toronto Area, this practice is built around clear advice, sound judgment and purposeful representation.

Legal problems rarely arrive as abstract questions. They arise at turning points: the end of a relationship, the loss of a loved one, the purchase of a home, a workplace change, a criminal charge or a dispute that can no longer be ignored.

At those moments, clients need more than legal information. They need to understand what the law means for their circumstances, what decisions must be made and what each available path may involve.

Lawrence and Joshua advise and represent clients in civil litigation, estates and trusts, real estate, employment law, family law, criminal defence, personal injury, and business and corporate law matters. Because these areas often intersect, we look beyond the immediate issue to identify related risks and practical consequences.

Together, Lawrence and Joshua bring courtroom advocacy, solicitor work and practical counsel to connected areas of law. The practice is informed by Lawrence’s 60 years in practice and Joshua’s experience since his call to the Bar in 2001. Their range of work helps identify related issues and address the matter as a whole.

Experience and continuity

The practice brings together two substantial perspectives on legal work. Lawrence J. Cohen, K.C. is now in his 60th year of practice and is a Life Member of the Law Society of Ontario. Joshua S. Cohen was called to the Bar in 2001.

That continuity gives the firm a long view of how legal rules and processes evolve, while keeping the work focused on the immediate questions each client needs to answer.

Our way of working

  1. Listen before advising

    We begin by understanding the facts, the history and what matters most to the client. This helps distinguish the central issue from the noise surrounding it.

  2. Explain before deciding

    We identify the relevant legal principles, available procedures and realistic options. Our goal is to give clients the clarity needed to make informed choices.

  3. Resolve where possible

    Negotiated solutions can preserve time, resources and relationships. We consider opportunities for sensible resolution throughout the matter.

  4. Advocate where necessary

    When a negotiated solution is not available or would not adequately protect the client’s interests, we prepare carefully and advocate through the appropriate court or process.

  5. Stay candid throughout

    We communicate openly about evidence, risk, timing and cost. Circumstances can change as a matter develops, and the strategy should be reviewed when they do.

A connected practice

The practice’s eight areas of law are intentionally broad enough to serve clients through related legal needs:

Seeing those connections helps the firm give advice that is legally focused and practically useful.

  • a family law matter may require advice about a home, corporation, pension, will or trust;
  • an estate administration may involve the sale of property or a contested accounting;
  • an employment disagreement may proceed as a civil claim;
  • a real estate problem may develop into litigation;
  • a criminal allegation may have immediate family and employment consequences;
  • a serious injury may involve insurance, financial loss, employment and family concerns; and
  • a business transaction may involve corporate records, shareholder relationships, real estate, employees, financing and succession planning.
